by Judith L Wood
The Human Rights Project was founded by Judith L Wood, Esq. in 1993. The attorneys of HRP refer to international treaties, domestic asylum law, and human rights country reports to secure relief for refugees, women, and children who have been victims of torture.
Judith L. Wood stands as a paragon of legal prowess and unwavering commitment to justice. Renowned for her exceptional legal acumen, Ms. Wood has left an indelible mark on the legal landscape, earning widespread respect for her tireless advocacy and dedication to upholding the principles of fairness and equity.
In Judy's Words:
I was inspired by my aunt, Zelda, who escaped from Auschwitz by digging a tunnel with her bare hands. I used to visit her in Williamsburg, Brooklyn when I was a child. I observed that her face was always full of light and love and that she never expressed any resentment despite the horrors she had endured.
The words and work of Benjamin B. Ferencz, a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials, continue to motivate me. He wrote, "Nuremberg taught me that creating a world of tolerance and compassion would be a long and arduous task... And I also learned that if we did not devote ourselves to developing effective world law, the same cruel mentality that made the Holocaust possible might one day destroy the entire human race."
Since its establishment in 1993, the Human Rights Project has been a steadfast advocate for the rights of immigrants, refugees, and asylees. A poignant focus of our efforts lies in supporting undocumented immigrant women, an "at-risk" population facing gender-based persecution in their homelands. Our mission is to fill this critical gap, recognizing that current immigration law does not explicitly address gender as grounds for asylum.
At the heart of our vision is a dedication to bringing global injustices to the forefront of our nation's consciousness. Leveraging our legal knowledge and expertise, the Human Rights Project seeks justice for victims of social inequities. Drawing upon international treaties, domestic asylum law, and human rights country reports, our team of four immigration attorneys and law school interns, contributing over 55000 laborious hours per year, diligently works to secure relief for those in need.
In recent years, the Human Rights Project has made significant strides in extending support to asylum seekers from diverse backgrounds, including Mexico, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Russia, El Salvador, Guatemala, China, Nepal, Nicaragua, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, and beyond. The foundational belief that "With Liberty and Justice for All" drives our commitment to address the widespread injustices suffered by individuals at the hands of their native governments.
Our success stories show our commitment to providing a lifeline for those facing persecution and seeking refuge. As we celebrate these achievements, our aspiration is to continue expanding our reach, assisting as many individuals in need as possible. By growing our efforts, we aim to be a beacon of hope for those who seek justice, transcending borders to make a meaningful impact on the lives of countless individuals around the world.
